Mentees come with an understanding of the workplace culture in organizations and positions they have held overseas, sometimes in more than one country. They will want to learn about the ins and outs of the Canadian workplace culture and how it is similar and different from workplace culture in other places. This valuable information will assist them as they look for employment. In particular, knowledge about workplace culture may help mentees prepare answers to interview questions.

This is an area where mentors have as much to learn as mentees about working in a culturally diverse work environment both locally and globally. So take advantage of the opportunity to exchange experiences.

Effective communication is key to succeeding in the Canadian workplace. Your mentoring relationship is an important opportunity to learn about and address communication issues, whether rooted in language or cultural differences or both. See Addressing language and communication issues for some helpful tips.
